Overview

The Perennial Plant Association (PPA) is proud to offer five scholarships to college students studying horticulture or a related subject area. Students enrolled in two or four-year programs are eligible to apply.

Each scholarship recipient will receive complimentary registration for lectures and tours at the 2012 Perennial Plant Symposium in Boston, Massachusetts July 4-10 and a $1000 scholarship. Recipients will also receive complimentary lodging during the symposium. Scholarship recipients are welcomed and encouraged to attend the entire symposium. Each recipient must attend July 6-8 to be eligible for the $1000 scholarship. Applicants should consider this requirement before applying.

The completed application, statement of purpose, official college transcript, and three letters of recommendation should be mailed to the PPA office by March 2, 2012. Each scholarship applicant will be notified in late April.

Requirements:

  • Student should be majoring or minoring in horticulture or a related field.
  • Student should have at least one quarter or semester remaining following spring term 2012.
  • Student should have a minimum 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
  • Recipients must be able to attend the 2012 Perennial Plant Symposium in Boston, Massachusetts.
  • An interest in a career in perennials is preferred but not required.
  • Applications must be postmarked on or before March 1, 2012.
  • Undergraduate students only are eligible.
  • Prior PPA scholarship recipients are not eligible.

I go to a technical college. Can I apply for the Perennial Plant Association Scholarship?
Yes.

Do I have to be in school to receive the PPA Scholarship?

Scholarship Winners

Brooke Gasteyer

Gasteyer is a sophomore at the University of Wisconsin - River Falls. She is majoring in Horticulture with a minor in Spanish.  Her industry work includes employment at Down to Earth Garden Center in Wisconsin where she is in charge of maintaining perennials and assisting customers. On campus, she is involved with the Horticulture Society and the Agriculture Education Society. Brooke would eventually like to own her own garden center and breed plants.

 

Graham Glauber

Glauber is attending the University of Vermont in Burlington, studying Sustainable Landscape Horticulture. After attaining his first job at the Perennial Gardens, Inc., Graham worked in the nursery and garden center assisting customers with plant selection, maintenance and care. Glauber is the current President of the Alpha Zeta Green Mountain Chapter, and the Horticulture Club. Upon graduation he hopes to start a landscape design and construction firm focusing on sustainability in site construction and plant maintenance.

 

Samuel Hoadley

Attending the University of Vermont, Hoadley is a junior majoring in Sustainable Landscape Horticulture. His industry work includes O’Brien Nurseryman where he was a member of their landscape crew. Samuel was also responsible for maintaining display gardens on the company property. For the summer of 2011, Sam accepted an internship with Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. Samuel is also involved with University of Vermont Track Team, Horticulture Club and Alpha Zeta Horticultural Honor Society. His career goal is to work in the fields of public display horticulture and landscape horticulture.

 

Sarah Leach

Leach is a junior at North Carolina State University majoring in General Horticulture. While at NCSU Sarah works for the NC State Fox Greenhouses where assists with the conservatory collection and numerous research projects. Sarah also works with Logan Trading Company overseeing social media marketing and attending trainings based around annuals, perennials, trees and shrubs. A member of the Horticulture Club, she plans to seek a job in the perennial growing and breeding industry after graduation.

 

Starlene Link

Majoring in Landscape Horticulture with a minor in Entomology, Starlene is a Junior at The Ohio State University. Link has a wide variety of industry experience including groundskeeper at Columbus State Community College and Capital University. She was responsible for design work and installation, including expanding the number of perennial beds on campus. On campus she is a member of Landscape and Floriculture Forum, PLANTET and ONLA. After graduation Stalene hopes to continue the introduction of new plants to improve aesthetics on campuses to be used at teaching tools for students.
